CAPE VERDE

5th STOP DURING ARGO
  • Location: Mindelo, São Vicente, Cape Verde, located in the central Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Africa.

  • Historical Significance: São Vicente is part of the Cape Verde archipelago, a critical waypoint for transatlantic navigation. Mindelo is renowned for its deep natural harbor, vibrant cultural life and strategic importance as a stopover for sailors preparing to cross the Atlantic.

  • Role in the Expedition:
Mindelo was the final opportunity to:

    • Rest and recover before the demanding transatlantic crossing.

    • Replenish provisions and stock up on essential supplies.

    • Perform necessary repairs and adjustments to the boat.

    • Take time to explore the beauty of Cape Verde, including the lively culture of São Vicente and the lush, dramatic landscapes of Santo Antão.

  • Conditions: The ocean between Lanzarote and Mindelo was relatively calm, with light winds prevailing throughout the passage. These conditions made for steady but slow progress and required some patience during this leg of the journey.

  • Boat: The boat remains Omaya, a Bavaria C45, with minor repairs and adjustments completed during the stay in Cape Verde to ensure readiness for the Atlantic crossing.

  • Duration of Stay: From January 5th to January 14th, 2024, the crew dedicated time to final preparations and provisioning. A three-day visit to Santo Antão provided a refreshing interlude, with its dramatic landscapes and lush valleys contrasting beautifully with São Vicente’s arid terrain.

  • Distance to Next Stop: 2,207 nm (approximately 4,087 km) to Le Marin, Martinique, with a sailing time of 13.5 days.
