MARTINIQUE
6th STOP DURING ARGO
-
Location: Le Marin, Martinique, located in the Lesser Antilles, in the Caribbean Sea.
-
Historical Significance: Martinique, an integral part of the French Caribbean, has a rich history shaped by colonialism, agriculture and its strategic position in the Caribbean. Le Marin is known for its bustling harbor, one of the largest in the Caribbean and its vibrant marine community.
-
Role in the Expedition: Le Marin marked a significant turning point in the expedition. Arriving on January 27th, 2023, it was a welcoming destination after the transatlantic crossing, as well as the start of a new chapter with the change of boat and crew. I disembarked Omaya, the Bavaria C45, and embarked aboard Anushka, a Dufour 50. This transition involved:
-
Adjustments to the new boat
-
Maintenance work on Omaya to prepare her for a two-month stay in port
-
Time to explore the island, including a visit to the Jardin Botanique de Balata
-
-
Conditions: The crossing from Mindelo to Martinique was marked by strong crosswinds (20-35 knots), which caused significant heeling of the boat. Though we had little downwind sailing, the conditions allowed for fast progress. Several squalls, with gusts reaching up to 40 knots, tested our technical skills and nerves.
-
Boat: The new boat for the next leg of the journey was Anushka, a Dufour 50. During this stop, Omaya underwent maintenance to ensure she was ready for her two-month stay in port.
-
Duration of Stay: From January 27th to February 6th, 2023, the stay in Le Marin provided time for preparations, maintenance, and relaxation in Martinique.
-
Distance to Next Stop: 133 nm (approximately 246 km) to Deshaies, Guadeloupe.
