TRANSATLANTIC

THE ATLANTIC CROSSING
  • Distance: 2,207 nm (approximately 4,087 km)

  • Duration: January 14th to January 27th, 2023

  • Conditions: This transatlantic crossing was marked by unusual and challenging conditions. Instead of the expected trade winds providing a steady downwind course, we encountered strong crosswinds ranging from 20 to 35 knots. This made life onboard particularly demanding, as the boat heeled significantly for most of the journey. The advantage of such conditions, however, was a remarkably fast crossing time, aided by the consistent power of the wind. Adding to the challenge were several squallsintense, short-lived stormsthat tested both our technical skills and our mental resilience. These squalls brought sudden gusts of up to 40 knots, requiring quick reactions and precise sail adjustments to maintain control and safety.

  • Role in the Expedition: The Atlantic crossing represents the culmination of months of preparation and is the most significant milestone of the expedition. The demanding conditions showcased the importance of teamwork, technical competence and the ability to adapt to unexpected circumstances. Despite the physical and mental toll, this crossing reaffirmed the rewards of perseverance, with the crew and vessel proving their capability in the face of adversity.

  • Boat: The boat remained Omaya, a Bavaria C45, performing admirably under challenging conditions. Minor adjustments were made during the voyage to optimize performance in the strong crosswinds.

  • Arrival: On January 27th, 2023, we reached Le Marin, Martinique, marking the successful conclusion of this major leg of the journey. The first sight of land was a moment of triumph and relief, symbolizing the completion of a dream and the start of new adventures in the Caribbean.
