ST. KITTS AND NEVIS

8th STOP DURING ARGO
  • Location: St. Kitts, one of the two islands that make up the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, located in the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean.

  • Historical Significance: St. Kitts is known for its colonial history and stunning landscapes. The island features lush rainforests, volcanic mountains and beautiful beaches. It holds significant historical value, particularly in the context of sugar production and early European colonization in the Caribbean.

  • Role in the Expedition: The stop at St. Kitts was unplanned, with the lack of wind forcing us to anchor and wait for better sailing conditions. With no immediate need for resupply or repairs, the island provided an opportunity for exploration and rest. Notable highlights included:

    • The ascent of Mount Liamuiga (1,156 meters), an active volcano, with a trail that leads to the rim of the caldera offering panoramic views of the island

    • A chance to relax and enjoy the island's natural beauty

    • Time to recharge after the long transatlantic crossing

  • Conditions: The calm conditions that led to the stop in St. Kitts were characterized by a complete lack of wind, which made sailing impossible. This forced us to anchor in the bay, where we stayed for the entire duration of our visit, awaiting the return of more favorable conditions.

  • Boat: We remained aboard Anushka, the Dufour 50, with no immediate need for repairs or resupply during our stay.

  • Duration of Stay: From February 10th to February 13th, 2024, the brief stay in St. Kitts provided much-needed rest, exploration and long administrative procedures for immigration.

  • Distance to Next Stop: 62 nm (approximately 115 km) to Marigot, St. Martin.
