LANZAROTE

4th STOP DURING ARGO
  • Location: Arecife, Lanzarote, Canary Islands, located off the coast of North Africa in the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Historical Significance: Lanzarote is one of the easternmost islands in the Canary Archipelago, known for its volcanic landscapes and significant role in maritime history. The island is famous for its unique terrain, which has been shaped by volcanic eruptions.

  • Role in the Expedition:

    • A crucial stop for rest, resupply and final preparations before crossing the Atlantic.

    • While the journey through the Strait of Gibraltar did not reveal any orca sightings, the sailing to the Canary Islands provided calm and good conditions for sailing.

  • Conditions: Navigation to Lanzarote was generally calm, though 1-2 days of larger waves were encountered as the journey shifted into the open Atlantic.

  • Boat: The boat remained Omaya, a Bavaria C45.

  • Duration of Stay: From December 22nd to December 29th, 2023, allowing time for resupply, maintenance and preparation before the long Atlantic crossing.

  • Distance to Next Stop: 1,000 nm (approximately 1,850 km) to Mindelo, São Vicente, Cape Verde.
