Location: Florida, the southeasternmost state in the United States, known for its tropical climate, expansive beaches and diverse ecosystems, marked the starting point of the second part of the expedition Sagitta.

Duration in the State: From March 14th to March 26th, 2024.

Historical Background: Florida, often referred to as the “Sunshine State”, has a rich history of exploration and cultural blending from its indigenous populations to Spanish colonization. It has since become a hub for tourism, space exploration and vibrant urban centers like Miami.

Route Type: The journey through Florida featured a mix of asphalt roads and well-maintained cycling paths with a few stretches of gravel.

Environment: The route passed through Florida’s lush and diverse environments including coastal areas, flat farmlands and dense forests. The vibrant greenery punctuated by wetlands and water bodies showcased the state’s unique natural beauty.

Weather Conditions: Hot and humid conditions dominated the ride requiring careful hydration and acclimatization. Occasional afternoon rain showers added variety but also a challenge.

Main Cities Traversed: Tallahassee was a key waypoint offering a glimpse into Florida’s capital city and its blend of southern charm and modernity.

Difficulties Encountered:

• The gradual process of reconditioning the body for extended hours of cycling after months of limited physical activity during the sailing phase.

• Adapting to the intense heat and high humidity of Florida’s springtime.

• Mechanical issues early in the journey required quick problem-solving.

• Rebuilding stamina for long hours on the saddle presented a physical and mental challenge.

Terrain: The route was predominantly flat making it relatively easy in terms of elevation though the distance and conditions required consistent effort.
