CALIFORNIA

9th STATE CROSSED DURING SAGITTA
  • Location: California, the final state on the Southern Tier route, offered a mix of dramatic landscapes and significant milestones as the expedition Sagitta approached its conclusion.

  • Duration in the State: From April 26th to April 30th, 2024.

  • Historical Background: California, often called the "Golden State", is famed for its diverse geography, vibrant cities and historical significance in the westward expansion of the United States.

  • Route Type: Predominantly asphalt roads with sections featuring rolling terrain as the route navigated the foothills of the Sierra.

  • Environment: The landscape transitioned from the golden sand dunes near Winterhaven to rugged foothills and scenic valleys. The proximity to the Mexican border and iconic natural features like the intersection with the Pacific Crest Trail near Boulder Oak highlighted the journey’s geographic diversity.

  • Weather Conditions: Strong winds posed a persistent challenge particularly in exposed areas.

  • Bike: Pepper 89 titanium gravel bike model Kampot.

  • Main City Traversed: San Diego, the vibrant coastal city that marked the final point of this leg of the expedition.

  • Notable Events:

    • Riding past the sand dunes near Winterhaven, a striking feature of California’s desert landscape.

    • Observing the Mexican border and its prominent wall one final time.

    • Passing the Pacific Crest Trail near Boulder Oak, a key moment ensuring the continuity of the expedition. Since the PCT is the next stage of my journey, this crossing symbolized the seamless connection between two phases without breaking the thread of the adventure.

    • Reaching the Pacific Ocean marking the completion of the cycling segment of Sagitta.

  • Difficulties Encountered:

    • Navigating the foothills of the Sierra presented steep and challenging climbs.

    • Strong winds added to the physical and mental demands of the final days of the journey.

  • Distance to the Ocean: 338 km (approximately 210 miles) to the Pacific coast.
